Stocks trend higher, consumer discretionary leads sector gains

Yahoo Finance Live's Julie Hyman breaks down the S&P 500 sectors and retail stock performances.

Video transcript

JULIE HYMAN: And let's dig into it here on the YFi Interactive to see what sectors are on the move. Here's today's action here. And we have consumer discretionary that is up the most today on the strength of some of these earnings we've been talking about.

Then we've got infotech in the second place there. It' up about 1.29%. Utilities, the only group in the red. I want to take it to the five-day view here to see what we've seen on the week. Here, this represents the S&P 500. And it's down about 3/10 of a percent on the week.

Tech has been strong. Thank you, NVIDIA. But on the flip side, we've got consumer staples and utilities and materials that have fallen on the week. We've been talking so much about retailers here that I do want to take a look at how they have done.

So let's take a quick look first at today's session here, where we have Amazon actually up 2.6%. Costco in the green now, up by about 1%. Ulta, as we've been talking about, is taking a hit. It is down by 12%. But just quickly, if we can look at that 10-day view here to see how they've done since we've got in the beginning of earnings, not a lot of strength there in the retailers. Diane?
