US added 175,000 jobs in April, unemployment rate rises

The US added 175,000 jobs in April, fewer than the 240,000 jobs economists polled by Bloomberg were expecting. The unemployment rate ticked higher to 3.9% versus the 3.8% estimate. Average hourly earnings rose 0.2% month-over-month and 3.9% year-over-year. The expectation had been for 0.3% and 4.0% respectively.

Yahoo Finance's Brad Smith and Akiko Fujita report the breaking details.
