Varadkar 'Relieved for Ireland and Relieved for the UK', Following Johnson's Election Victory

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told reporters at the European Council in Brussels that he was “relieved for his country and also relieved for the UK,” after Boris Johnson secured a large majority in the general election on December 12.

Remarking that the election was “good television last night,” Varadkar expressed congratulations to Johnson on his victory. “I think it is a positive thing that we have a decisive outcome for Britain in their elections,” he said.

The Irish leader warned that striking a trade deal by the end of 2020 would be ambitious, but said: “It’s always easier for us to negotiate with a partner who has a strong personal mandate in the parliament.” Credit: European Council via Storyful
