Very Wrong Number: Phone Scammer Calls New Zealand Police

A phone scammer got more than he bargained for when his target revealed himself to be a New Zealand police officer, with audio of the awkward exchange released on September 23.

In the audio, the scammer says he is calling regarding an unsecured internet connection.

Officer Dan promptly replies that he’d be “very surprised if our internet wasn’t secure.”

The faltering caller soon hangs up, saying, “sorry to bother you.”

Police posted the exchange on Instagram, with the hashtag #fail. On a more serious note, they warned the public never to give such callers access to their computers, or any personal information. Credit: New Zealand Police via Storyful
