Volcanic Eruption Sends Lava, Smoke Into Air Over Canary Islands

“Powerful explosions” were registered at the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma on September 23, according to official reports.

Video shared by the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) shows lava shooting into the sky at 7 pm Thursday.

Involcan said the explosions had been ongoing since 5:20 pm.

Eruption activity at Cumbre Vieja was first reported at around 3:30 pm local time on September 19. Scientists with the European Space Agency’s Copernicus program forecast that toxic sulfur dioxide gas emitted by the volcano will reach the Iberian Peninsula later this week.
