China will assess possible threats posed by Japan's release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant to the safety of related food and agricultural products and their trade, the commerce ministry said on Thursday. According to plans unveiled by Japan on Tuesday, the release of more than 1 million tonnes of contaminated water into the sea from the plant crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011 will start in about two years after filtering it to remove harmful isotopes. The plan drew immediate opposition from its neighbours South Korea, China and Taiwan.

Negotiations to bring the United States back into a landmark nuclear deal with Iran are set to resume Thursday in Vienna amid signs of progress — but also under the shadow of an attack this week on Iran's main nuclear facility. In 2015, Iran signed an agreement with the U.S., Russia, China, Germany, France and Britain that was intended to set limits on Tehran's nuclear program in order to block it from building a nuclear weapon — something it insists it doesn't want to do. In exchange, Iran received relief from sanctions that those powers had imposed, including on its exports of oil and access to the global banking system.

(Bloomberg) -- Malaysia’s main equity index is languishing, but the nation’s small stocks are powering ahead as retail investors pile into a risky corner of the market. The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Small Cap Index has jumped 34% from a November low and is trading at the highest level since 2000 relative to the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index. The benchmark index is down 1.6% for the year. The outperformance has seen the small-cap index’s market value almost triple from a year earlier to a record 137 billion ringgit ($33 billion), underscoring the growing heft of amateur stock-pickers who drove up market volumes globally last year.READ: GameStop Mania Spreads Half a World Away to Glove MakersAnnual volume for Malaysia’s small stock gauge hit a record 217 billion shares in 2020 amid bets the smaller companies may be more nimble than their bigger counterparts to adapt to the unprecedented changes induced by the pandemic.“Small-cap party is getting a boost from the rising number of retail investors, who usually prefer such names,” said Danny Wong, chief executive officer of Areca Capital Sdn., which had about 1.73 billion ringgit in assets as of April last year. “Prices are no longer cheap. One should stay selective.”The small-cap index retreated 1% on Thursday, the most since March 19, while the KLCI climbed 0.5%.Political uncertainty has weighed on Malaysia’s main stock index along with the slide in the three of the biggest glove makers whose investment appeal has waned from global vaccine rollouts. Top Glove Corp., Supermax Corp. and Hartalega Holdings Bhd. are biggest decliners on the benchmark so far this year. The divergence may persist as smaller firms provide investors an opportunity to bet on “undiscovered growth stocks that could yield higher earnings growth than the KLCI index,” Walter Aw, an analyst at CGS CIMB Research, wrote in a report.CGS-CIMB’s small- and mid-cap corporate access day event held last week drew 145 clients from 65 institutions, he said.(Updates to add market performance in sixth paragraph.)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2021 Bloomberg L.P.

Atletico Madrid will bid to get their stuttering title challenge back on track when they host bottom club Eibar on Sunday. Atletico held a 10-point lead at the start of February but that advantage over local rivals Real Madrid is now just a point, with Barcelona two back in third place, and they can ill-afford any more slip-ups if they are to claim a first La Liga crown since 2014. Diego Simeone's side have won just one of their last four league games but captain Koke said if they can remain mentally strong they will be well-placed to hold off their rivals during the run-in.

Dublin, April 15, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The "Biomedical and ICT Convergence Market by Technology, Solution and Region 2021-2026" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering. This report evaluates the market for convergence between the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry and biomedical science and technologies. The report evaluates the latter and analyzes the former in terms of ICT innovation such as connected medical devices. In addition to forecasts for IoT connected healthcare devices (standalone, wearable, and implantable), the report also assesses the outlook from 2021 to 2026 for various biomedical products, services, and solutions poised to benefit from various IT and telecom technologies. The convergence of biomedical and ICT represents a high opportunity area for both healthcare and ICT industries. In addition to seeking cures to disease and ailment prevention, combined biomedical and ICT solutions will lead to improved treatment efficacy as well as overall improvements in healthcare service delivery efficiency and effectiveness. With healthcare costs growing much faster than the general inflation rate, it is of the utmost importance to simultaneously seek improved treatment while continuously driving down business costs. These costs include ongoing operational expenditures aswell as expensive R&D such as drug discovery and other pharmaceutical-related areas such as vaccine development that takes into account precision medicine practices. Various ICT tools may be employed such as IoT enabled monitoring to determine the effectiveness of medical procedures, which can be especially important when administering new and unproven healthcare modalities. One specific example is the administration of vaccines, which is believed to potentially cause harm to a subset of the population based on epigenetics, which is the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. This is believed to be an area in which a healthcare modality (in this example, vaccines) is designed with one intent (to inoculate one to prevent the onset of disease),but may actually trigger unintended consequences such as causing harm based on an individual's unique gene expression. One of the fastest-growing areas for ICT in healthcare is the use of wireless access by IP-enabled, handheld digital devices. Wearables and implantable technology hold the promise of a level of monitoring and healthcare administration that is unprecedented in the history of health science. Ranging from treatment administration to clinical decision support, connected devices are a rapidly evolving tool for the advancement of healthcare practices. These same tools may be used for both reactive and proactive medical modalities such as insulin modification and vaccine optimization respectively. The convergence of ICT and biomedicine is therefore anticipated to lead to both improved economics (lower costs and improved revenues through the identification of new healthcare treatments) as well as improve overall public health.
