'Extraordinary Year' For Fraudsters In The UK

The cost of fraud in Britain topped a record £3.5bn in 2011 in what has been described as an "extraordinary year" for conmen.

Accounting firm KPMG's annual Fraud Barometer recorded £2.5bn worth of fraudulent activity in the second half of the year, the most ever in a six-month period.

Five of the cases listed in the report involve amounts of more than £50m each.

Hitesh Patel, KPMG Forensic Partner said: "2011 was an extraordinary year for fraudsters - as demonstrated by the record losses through large-scale cases of fraud which dominated the headlines."

He said the reasons were twofold: "Companies and government agencies have rooted out more fraud through implementing austerity measures and operational changes.

"At the same time the pressures on individuals as a result of the downturn continues to act as a catalyst for more fraud being perpetrated. "

Public sector and financial institutions were worst hit with 68 fraud cases - the highest ever number - costing more than £1bn.

The KPMG report shows that professional criminals were largely to blame, but in some cases management insiders and customers were also responsible.

Despite improved security by the major banks, as customers move to online and mobile platforms to manage their accounts, the pressure on the industry is mounting to beat fraudulent activities.

With the authorities closing in, fraudsters have had to find more inventive ways to swindle those looking for investments.

KPMG recorded one scam in a fine wine and whisky investment scheme worth £30m, which turned out to be a "Ponzi" type-fraud offering investors returns of 110% over three months.

Mr Patel concluded: "Sadly, due to the current economic circumstances the forecast is that the situation will get worse before it gets better.

"It is important that organisations do not become myopic on this point and ensure they have robust prevention and detection mechanisms."

The con men are out there in force, starting with the Government, then the Bankers, then the Power companies and last but not least the Supermarkets, only the British can be convinced by the Con Merchant Glomerates that we are all conners, while being conned by them at the top, more propaganda to break down society and solidarity, while they put you out of work, take all your cash and repossess your homes, so you will feel good that you weren't conned by someone else

3.5 billion? hmmmm. not as bad as 2008 when Royal Bank of Scotland stole 35 billion from the taxpayers to prop up their mistakes (and then paid themselves million bonuses to celebrate!)
The government are the real fraudsters for allowing this to happen, but hey, they've got enough to worry about-fiddling expenses takes up a lot of valuble time

Best thing is to only access your account via your computer I hear the phones are open to hacking - and only use accounts that allow similar logging in as per pinsentry... do not reply to emails.. do not give details over the phone or via the net - if in doubt GO TO YOUR BANK IN PERSON..
Your bank, council, student finance, tax office ETC DO NOT NEED YOU TO GIVE THEM YOUR PIN hahahha - stop being stupid people

British Labour frontbencher David Miliband has been using the very tax loopholes, condemned by the government he served, to except his huge income from tax.
The former foreign secretary is earning up to £21,000 a day and channeling his earnings to a company jointly owned with his wife -- The Office Of David Miliband Limited -- effectively getting exemptions for half of his non-parliamentary earrings.

Miliband recently pocketed £64,475 for a three-day advising role from the United Arab Emirates foreign ministry.

His revenues even outweigh those of banking giant RBS chief Stephen Hester who has earned notoriety for bagging £6,000 a day in salary and bonus.

Yet through a loophole that allows tax reductions for joint enterprises if they take their income in the form of shared dividends, Miliband has managed to keep a great portion of his money to himself.

And after his speech on fairness and how there is less money to go round.....Try to lead by example...and a new direction for labour.....is this the exact same path as Tony Blair...the trustworthy....upstanding and honest Pm of past???

      Charlatans the lot of them

Fraudsters succeed because a lot of people are, themselves, gready and are always looking for a quick buck. Also the fraudsters can be very clever but often obvious.

This is only scratching the surface of fraud in the UK.It all depends on who is examining fraud.I consider banks and big business moving billions of untaxed money to offshore accounts fraud.I also consider the use of tax loopholes for the rich fraud.Directors voting each other obscene wages and bonuses fraud. That the government encourage these practices by ignoring them I also consider fraud.Real fraud in the UK is over 100 billion per year and is fed by greed, selfishness and low morals.

I live in Germany and I see none of the anti-money laundering rules here and very little of this problem. Yet in the UK where I am not able to move money without 3 types of ID, the real crooks are getting away with murder. Me thinks the rules need changing!!
