Harley-Davidson Reveals Electric Motorcycle

Harley-Davidson has unveiled its first electric motorcycle, with a 130-mile range.

Handmade demonstration models of the bike - dubbed Project LiveWire - will be shown off at an invitation-only event in New York (Frankfurt: HX6.F - news) on Monday.

The company then plans to take several dozen riders on a 30-city tour to test drive the bikes and provide feedback.

Company president Matt Levatich said: "Like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in our history, with customers leading us every step of the way."

The battery-powered motorcycles have a limited range; they must be recharged after about 130 miles, and that can take 30 minutes to an hour.

And while the engine is silent, the meshing of gears emits a distinctive hum.

Marketing officer Mark-Hans Richer said: "The sound is a distinct part of the thrill. Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier."

Harley-Davidson could potentially break new ground with the bike as there is currently no significant market for full-size electric motorcycles.
