One Ford Motor Insider Raised Stake By 34% In Previous Year

Viewing insider transactions for Ford Motor Company's (NYSE:F ) over the last year, we see that insiders were net buyers. This means that a larger number of shares were purchased by insiders in relation to shares sold.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Ford Motor Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Chief Advanced Product Development & Technology Officer John Field for US$2.0m worth of shares, at about US$11.05 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of US$12.20. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider bought shares at close to current prices. John Field was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.

Ford Motor Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Ford Motor shares. In total, Chief Accounting Officer Mark Kosman dumped US$337k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Insider Ownership Of Ford Motor

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Ford Motor insiders own 1.3% of the company, worth about US$634m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The Ford Motor Insider Transactions Indicate?

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. On the other hand, the insider transactions over the last year are encouraging. And insider ownership remains quite considerable. So the recent selling doesn't worry us. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Ford Motor. For example, Ford Motor has 3 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
