The 21% return this week takes Innovative Solutions and Support's (NASDAQ:ISSC) shareholders five-year gains to 72%

It hasn't been the best quarter for Innovative Solutions and Support, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISSC) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 22% in that time. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 48%, less than the market return of 105%.

Since it's been a strong week for Innovative Solutions and Support shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the five years of share price growth, Innovative Solutions and Support moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. We can see that the Innovative Solutions and Support share price is up 14% in the last three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 23% each year. This EPS growth is higher than the 4% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Innovative Solutions and Support's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Innovative Solutions and Support's TSR of 72% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Innovative Solutions and Support shareholders are down 7.0% for the year, but the market itself is up 28%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 12% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Innovative Solutions and Support that you should be aware of.
