Panasonic TVs have long had a reputation for being more cinematic than most, and there’s a good reason for that: there’s a little bit of tinsel town DNA in all its flatscreens.

The Japanese brand has deep ties with the Hollywood film community, even going so far as to working with creatives, who work on box office hits, to help in research and development.

This is evident in the 4K UHD 50-inch HX600.

Why we rate it

This big screen may have a tiny bezel and neat brushed metal pedestal, but it still finds room to pack in some blockbuster features.

Picture quality is detailed and dynamic, with rich colours. Dolby Vision HDR, used to make images more realistic, has been combined here with Panasonic’s own Studio Colour Engine, for maximum vibrancy with Dolby Vision programmes and movies.

The TV also supports Dolby Atmos, the immersive cinema sound format. Connect the set up to a Dolby Atmos soundbar or home cinema system, and the audio will literally engulf you – and that’s a good thing.

Naturally, it's smart. It works with Google and Amazon Alexa smart voice assistants, allowing you to change channels or adjust volume, by voice command.

And if sports are more your style, then there’s some powerful motion compensation onboard too, to reduce blur and judder. If we get a Wimbledon this year, you’ll be able to follow all the balls.

The set is Freeview Play enabled, which means you get all the key catch-up TV services, and there’s Netflix, Prime Video and Youtube apps on-board too.

Did you know Freeview Play offers more than 30,000 hours of free-to-watch on-demand TV? That’s a lot of box-sets.

Of course, all this refinement doesn’t come cheap.

At £599, the HX600 has a premium over some rival 50-inch sets. But if you’re going to be glued to the box for months to come, maybe your eyes deserve a little Hollywood indulgence...
