Alicia Vikander To Play Lara Croft In Reboot

Alicia Vikander To Play Lara Croft In Reboot

Oscar winner Alicia Vikander is to follow in Angelina Jolie's footsteps by taking on the role of archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft in a new Tomb Raider film.

The latest film will be an origin story following the young Croft as she sets off on her first adventure, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was released in 2001 and was based on the 1996 video game.

Jolie reprised the role two years later for Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life.

The films were not hits with the critics but did perform well at the box office, with the original taking $275m worldwide.

MGM, which acquired the film rights in 2012, has not officially announced hiring Swedish star Vikander but Variety reported that the reboot will be developed with Warner Bros and GK Films.

Vikander won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role as artist Gerda Wegener in 2015's The Danish Girl.

She appeared the same year in British sci-fi thriller Ex Machina where she starred as the humanoid robot Ava and for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.

She recently wrapped up filming for Jason Bourne, which sees Matt Damon return to the big screen as the amnesiac super-spy.
