In its latest step targeting a major marketplace, the European Commission sent Amazon another request for information (RFI) Friday in relation to its compliance under the bloc's rulebook for digital services. The development highlights areas where EU enforcers are dialing up their scrutiny of the e-commerce giant, with the bloc asking for more info about Amazon's recommender systems, ads transparency provisions and risk assessment measures. A Commission spokesperson confirmed the e-commerce giant has received three RFIs in all -- following a January ask for more info on how it's providing data access for researchers.
There’s no doubt that mobile phones have made trips abroad more convenient. From apps that store boarding passes to mobile banking and online restaurant reservations, they can simplify holiday admin and make it easier to navigate tricky language barriers. But technological advances have benefited thieves and cyber criminals too – and using a phone on holiday could put users at risk of data theft, burglaries and more.
The amount of cryptocurrency stolen in hacks globally more than doubled in the first six months of 2024 from a year earlier, driven by a small number of large attacks and rising crypto prices, blockchain researchers TRM Labs said on Friday. Hackers had stolen more than $1.38 billion worth of crypto by June 24, 2024, compared with $657 million in the same period in 2023, TRM Labs said in a report. "While we have not seen any fundamental changes in the security of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, we have seen a significant increase in the value of various tokens - from bitcoin to ETH (ether) and Solana - compared to the same time last year," said Ari Redbord, global head of policy at TRM Labs.
There's no need to worry that your secret ChatGPT conversations were obtained in a recently reported breach of OpenAI's systems. No security breach should really be treated as trivial, and eavesdropping on internal OpenAI development talk certainly has its value. Let's talk about three kinds of data OpenAI and, to a lesser extent, other AI companies created or have access to: high-quality training data, bulk user interactions, and customer data.
STORY: ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has been the victim of a cyber attack. That’s according to reports by the New York Times on Thursday. It says a hacker gained access last year to internal messaging systems. Details of the company’s artificial intelligence products were reportedly stolen. However, it’s thought the hacker didn’t actually get into the systems where OpenAI houses and builds its AI. There was no comment on the report from the Microsoft-backed firm. Executives reportedly informed staff and the board in April last year. They didn’t share the news publicly, as no customer data was stolen. The report says the incident wasn’t considered to be a national security threat, with the hacker not thought to have ties to a foreign government. OpenAI said in May that it had disrupted five covert influence operations that sought to use its AI for “deceptive activity” across the internet.

British politics has hardly covered itself in glory in recent years. After the shame of the Corbyn years was punctured by the glorious Tory victory of 2019, we were subjected to a veritable gallery of disgrace: soaring immigration, Covid authoritarianism, Partygate, the Truss-Kwarteng interregnum, Gaza fanaticism. But the true nadir was the election of George Galloway in Rochdale.
