Yahoo Finance Bake Off Winner Describes Having To "Smuggle" Trophy Home
The Great British Bake Off came to an end last night (24th November) with Peter Sawkins being crowned the series' very deserving winner.
At just 20 years old, Edinburgh-born Peter has the distinction of being the youngest-ever winner in the show's 10-year history.
But now that the episode has aired on Channel 4, Peter can finally share his good news with everyone – a welcome relief after the student had to keep his big secret for months, something that caused him a lot of stress when he travelled back home following the competition and had to somehow keep the Bake Off cake stand trophy hidden.
"After winning the trophy I had to smuggle it on the plane back to Edinburgh," Peter said.
"I was a bit stressed when we went through the scanners. And then it stayed on my family worktop in the kitchen hidden in a box. I can't wait to crack it out of the box and give it as much use as I possibly can."
This year's Bake Off was certainly the most unique, with the show having to be filmed in a bubble due to coronavirus restrictions.
Speaking about the odd filming circumstances, Peter said: "Filming in the bubble was certainly a unique experience inside and outside the tent. It was a very intense environment to be in but it was hugely fun whilst filming and also in our down time.
"You saw Paul on his moped, the crew doing Yoga or playing rounders or tennis. It was like a grown ups holiday camp for seven weeks."
Peter was crowned Bake Off's 2020 winner after beating Laura Adlington and Dave Friday in what judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith described as the "closest" final they've ever judged.

For his final three challenges, Peter had to make custard slices, walnut whirls, and a Showstopper dessert tower that reflected his Bake Off experience.
After winning the series, Peter said: "I wanted this a lot. When I was 12, I was watching repeats of Bake Off back to back, and it got me into baking big time.
"I am a Bake Off nerd, and I think 12-year-old Peter would be in awe, and just the most excited giddy kid. I am that excited giddy kid right now."
