These Bamboo Face Masks Are a Breathable Alternative to Cotton Ones (and Only Cost $14)

Those who live in hot, humid climates are probably used to sweating through their clothes during the summertime, but now they also have to handle wearing a cloth face mask in rising temperatures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization both recommend everyone in public places wear tight-fitting cloth face masks made with layers of fabric to slow the spread of the coronavirus. And while a mask with layers of cotton is manageable in cooler seasons, there are more breathable material alternatives for summer that are just as effective at protecting yourself and others from COVID-19.

“Bamboo face masks can be a great alternative to cloth face masks,” says Karl E. Minges, PhD, MPH, assistant professor, chair of the Department of Health Administration and Policy, and director of the Master of Public Health Program at the University of New Haven School of Health Sciences. Not only is bamboo environmentally friendly (it grows quickly with little water and no pesticides), but it’s also anti-bacterial, odor-resistant, and moisture-wicking, he explains.

Basically, a bamboo cloth mask likely provides the same protection from COVID-19 transmission as a cotton cloth face mask, but with the added benefits of comfort and functionality. No matter what type of mask you choose, you’ll want to buy one with multiple layers that fits tightly on the nose and chin, according to Minges.

If you’re looking for a breathable face mask to wear this summer that fits Minges’ criteria, travel brand Nxtstop has you covered. It recently released a reusable adjustable face mask made with 95 percent bamboo and just a bit of spandex. The mask features a tightly knit outer layer and a second layer for added protection. You can tighten or loosen the stretchy ear loops for a custom fit, and a wire nose bridge keeps the mask comfortably in place while the fabric stays snug on your face. Plus, you can safely clean the mask in the washing machine after use.

“I bought two of these masks and am in love with them. [I] love that the bamboo feels like a dry fit material making it super lightweight and breathable,” one Amazon reviewer wrote.

The bamboo face masks have already sold out on Amazon, although more are on the way and cotton options are still in stock. Or you can have your pick of bamboo or cotton masks in four colors and two sizes (for adults and children) on the brand’s website, where all versions are currently available.
