‘Being a stepmom is really hard sometimes’: Mom explains the challenges of co-parenting in emotional TikTok

This TikTok parent shared an emotional video explaining a surprising reason why being a stepmom can be difficult.

Chloe (@chloebluffcakes) is a parent and TikToker who shares videos about everything from parenthood to baking. In a recent video, Chloe told a story about her stepson, Mason, and explained why it can be so hard to be a stepparent.

In the emotional TikTok, Chloe explains that even though she has a great relationship with Mason, sharing her son with his biological mom can cause unexpected problems.

Auto insurance rates are increasing in 2022 — here’s how to prepare

The video begins with a shot of Chloe in her home. The stepmother wears a gray sweater and her red hair is loose around her shoulders as she stares into the camera with a sad look on her face. “Being a stepmom is really hard sometimes,” she says, holding back tears. “Not because of my kid. My kid is amazing.”

Chloe waves her hand in front of the camera and takes a moment to reel in her emotions before continuing. “I’ll tell you a little story why,” she says. “We’ve dealt with high conflict toxic BS for years and really found a way to just sail past.”

A look of anger crosses Chloe’s face as she tells the story. “But days like today,” she says. “[Mason’s] watching me make him dinner tonight and he asks, ‘Hey you’re going to come get me from school tomorrow, right?’ Because he knows we switch households in the middle of the week,” Chloe recalls. “I said, ‘Well, buddy, I think your mom wants you to go to aftercare.’”

Jordyn Woods says her Instagram isn’t real life:

Unfortunately, aftercare is not an appealing prospect for Mason. “Mind you, because of COVID, aftercare is every kid sitting at a table alone to themselves, quiet, not allowed to play together, not allowed to come into contact,” Chloe explains. “Probably, they’re doing homework or just drawing for three hours, after already sitting through school.”

Chloe’s stepson begged her not to make him stay at aftercare for three hours, but Chloe knew it was up to his biological mom, and not her. “My heart just sank,” she recalls. “I said, ‘Yeah, buddy, I’ll definitely ask.’ But I already knew.”

“I sent a nice text [to Mason’s mom] saying, ‘Hey, he really wants to come home. You can pick him up from us when you get off work because you have to pass our house anyway,’” says Chloe. Chloe then shares Mason’s biological mom’s response to her proposition. “‘Absolutely not.’”

Chloe put Mason to bed knowing she would have to disappoint him in the morning. “Now I have to wake him up in the morning and say, ‘I’m sorry,’” she says.

Viewers expressed their sympathy with Chloe.

“This is so sweet. Proof that family doesn’t always mean blood,” commented one viewer.

“I’m not a stepmom but I have one. So coming from the stepchild POV it helps us just knowing that you tried even if at first we don’t understand,” another viewer wrote.

“Hang in there. He knows you love him and he considers your house home,” commented another TikToker.

Being a stepmom isn’t always easy for Chloe, but her love for Mason always keeps her going!
