U.S. stocks surged on Thursday, with major indexes up more than 1 percent in a broad rally, as strong results from industrial bellwethers reassured investors that corporations continue to fare well despite concerns about global economic growth. The S&P industrial sector rose 2.4 percent as the biggest advancing sector on the day. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 1.61 percent at 16,725.84, the S&P 500 was up 1.50 percent at 1,956.09 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 75.11 points, or 1.71 percent, to 4,457.95.

** DEERE & CO, $85.03, +1.93 pct

The world's largest maker of earth-moving equipment comfortably beat even the highest estimate on the Street and raised its 2014 profit forecast. The company was helped by robust demand from the construction and oil and gas industries in North America.

The stock, down about 16 percent since its July peak through Wednesday, notched up one of its biggest gains of the year. The result also helped peers Cummins and Deere & Co.

** 3M CO, $146.4, +5.36 pct

The Post-It maker's stock had its best day in three years after the company's quarterly profit topped Wall Street's estimate, boosted by a 3 percent increase in sales at its industrial business, its largest.

The stock has remained largely flat this year, compared with a 4.3 percent increase in S&P 500.

** SCHULMAN A INC, $35.64, +19.06 pct

The specialty chemical maker's stock became one of the top gainers on the Nasdaq after it reported better-than-expected fourth quarter profit and revenue.

** O'REILLY AUTOMOTIVE INC, $167.54, +6.47 pct

The auto parts retailer reported better-than-expected third quarter revenue and profit late on Wednesday, boosted by a 6.2 percent rise in comparable-store sales.

Brokerage Raymond James raised its price target to $190 from $180, citing O'Reilly's low operating costs and better-than-expected same-store sales growth. Morgan Stanley (Xetra: 885836 - news) raised price target to $190, citing company's strengthening commercial parts unit.

** SILICON LABS INC, $44.57, +15.20 pct

The chipmaker's shares crossed their 50-day moving average for the first time since Sept. 2. The company reported better-than-expected third quarter profit and revenue and forecast current quarter revenue above the Wall Street estimates.

** CITRIX SYSTEMS INC (NasdaqGS: CTXS - news) , $61.54, -5.00 pct

At least seven brokerages cut their price targets on the cloud-computing software maker's stock by as much as $5 to a low of $60 after company's third-quarter revenue and 2014 revenue forecast fell short of analysts's estimates. The stock has a median price target of $70.

** COLFAX CORP, $54.14, -2.33 pct

The maker of pumps and valves reported a lower-than-expected third quarter profit, hurt by an 18 pct rise in expenses and lower demand for its products.

** DANA HOLDING CORP, $20.55, +17.50 pct

The vehicle driveline technology supplier reported better-than-expected third-quarter profit due to lower intangibles amortization, pension expense and restructuring charges. The company's full-year adjusted profit outlook also beat the average analyst estimate.

** CHIQUITA BRANDS INTERNATIONAL INC (NYSE: CQB - news) , $13.69, +7.46 pct

Brazilian juice maker Grupo Cutrale and investment firm Safra Group on Thursday raised a definitive offer to buy Chiquita, a day ahead of a meeting where shareholders of the U.S.-based banana producer will vote on a merger with rival Fyffes Plc (Other OTC: FYFFF - news) .

** DIAMOND OFFSHORE DRILLING INC (NYSE: DO - news) , $39.45, +5.57 pct

One of the world's top five offshore rig contractors reported a 4.5 percent rise in its third quarter revenue, helped by higher demand and improved rigrates for its ultra-deepwater rigs.

** SERVICENOW INC (NYSE: NOW - news) , $64.72, +11.45 pct

At least three brokerages raised their price target on the IT software maker's stock. The company on Wednesday reported better-than-expected quarterly profit and revenue and also forecast full-year revenue above the average analyst estimate.

** NEOPHOTONICS CORP, $2.97, +20.73 pct

The company, which makes components used in optical networking circuits, improved its third quarter forecast to a loss of 4 cents per share to a profit of 6 cents per share from a loss of 4 cents-14 cents per share.

The company said it plans to acquire EMCORE Corp's tunable laser and transceiver assets for about $17.5 million.

** DOMTAR CORP, $40.23, +11.44 pct

The Canadian paper and pulp products producer posted a much better-than-expected third quarter profit, helped by 3 percent drop in operating expenses. The company said lower raw material costs, higher selling prices for paper and higher pulp shipments, were partially offset by lower selling prices for pulp.

** IPC THE HOSPITALIST CO INC, $38.98, -17.13 pct

The healthcare service provider's third quarter results missed average analyst estimate and the company lowered its full-year profit and sales forecast as a large number of physicians left to join rivals.

Four brokerages cut their price target on the stock by as much as $6 to as low as $42 - now the lowest target on the Street. Wells Fargo cut its rating to "market perform" from "outperform", becoming the fourth brokerage to downgrade the stock since last week.

** ULTRATECH INC (NasdaqGS: UTEK - news) , $17.87, -13.75 pct

The laser-processing systems supplier's stock touched a three-year low of $17.31 after the company reported a third quarter loss of 23 cents per share compared with an estimate of breaking even on a per share basis as expenses rose.

** 8x8 Inc, $7.64, +14.03 pct

Brokerage B. Riley & Co raised its price target on the communications services provider's stock to $8.50 from $8. The stock has a median price target of $10. The company raised its annual revenue growth forecast after its second-quarter profit and revenue beat the average analyst estimate.

** INFINERA CORP, $13.36, +25.92 pct

The network gear maker's shares were the biggest gainer on the Nasdaq, touching their highest in more than six years after the company reported higher-than-expected third quarter profit and revenue.

JP Morgan raised its price target on the stock to $15 from $13 while Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS-PB - news) raised it to$14 from $13. The stock has a median price target of $14.75.

** BUILD-A-BEAR WORKSHOP INC, $15.499, +21.66 pct

The toy retailer's shares touched a more than six-year high of $16 and was the second-highest percentage gainer on the New York Stock Exchange.

The company reported better-than-expected third quarter revenue and profit, helped by higher same-store sales and wider margins.

** CABELA'S INC, $49.91, -13.86 pct

The marketer of hunting, fishing and camping merchandise reported a lower-than-expected third quarter adjusted profit, hurt by a 11.2 percent fall in same-store sale. The retailer said it expected its fourth quarter same-store sales to decrease at a mid-single digit percentage rate.

** COMCAST CORP, $53.25, +3.42 pct

The largest U.S. cable operator reported higher quarterly revenue and income on Thursday as more people signed up for its high-speed Internet service and fewer customers dropped their cable subscriptions.

** GRUBHUB INC (NYSE: GRUB - news) , $37.9, +1.96 pct

The online food delivery firm reported a more than five-fold jump in quarterly profit as more consumers used the online food-order-and-delivery company to order meals.

** CYTORI THERAPEUTICS (NasdaqGM: CYTX - news) , $0.5166, +11.75 pct

The drug developer received a nod from the United States Food and Drug Administration to resume patient enrollment in two trials testing the safety and feasibility of its stem cell therapy in heart failure patients. The trials were halted earlier this year over concerns of adverse events like stroke.

** AT&T INC (Sao Paolo: ATTB34.SA - news) , $33.54, -2.78 pct premarket

The telecom company posted weaker-than-expected third-quarter profit and revenue. Revenue rose 2.5 percent to $33 billion, just shy of the average analysts' estimate of $33.2 million.

The results pressured the telecom sector, which lost 1.1 percent as the only one of the ten primary S&P 500 sectors down on the day. The stock was the biggest drag on the S&P 500.

** YELP INC (Xetra: A1JQ9H - news) , $59.56, -15.19 pct

The operator of consumer review website Yelp.com forecast current-quarter revenue below analysts' average estimate.

At least 13 brokerages cut their price targets on the stock by as much as $17 to as low as $60. The stock, which has a median price target of $85, was the biggest percentage loser on the New York Stock Exchange.

** NOKIA CORP, $8.38, +5.67 pct

Finland's Nokia beat market expectations as it reported strong third quarter profit growth and lifted the profitability outlook for its core network gear unit on the back of large network rollouts in North America and China.

The stock was the second most active on the New York Stock Exchange.

** SEARS HOLDINGS CORP, $36.01, +4.62 pct

The struggling retailer will lay off at least 5,457 employees and close over 100 stores, many before Christmas, according to a Seeking Alpha report, citing liquidation notices and employees.

** JAKKS PACIFIC INC (NasdaqGS: JAKK - news) , $7.31, -8.17 pct

The toymaker raised its full-year net sales and profit forecast and reported a better-than-expected third-quarter sales, helped by higher demand for Frozen Snow Glow Elsa doll and Light Up Musical dresses.

** NEW MOUNTAIN FINANCE CORP, $14.44, -3.09 pct

The business development company's portfolio company UniTek Global Services Inc will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

New Mountain estimated net asset value per share at about $14.35, as of Oct. 22, reflecting partial write-down related to debt restructuring of UniTek.

The company said it expects adjusted net investment income per share of 34-35 cents for the quarter ended Sept. 30.

New Mountain offered 5 million common shares at $14.53 each, a 2.5 pct discount to the stock's Wednesday close. The offering represents about 9 percent of the company's total share capital.

** ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISES LTD (NYSE: RCL - news) , $61.95, -2.32 pct

The world's second-largest cruise operator, forecast full-year profit below analysts' estimates due to stiff competition in the Caribbean, its biggest market, and a stronger dollar.

** JETBLUE AIRWAYS CORP, $10.9, -2.50 pct

The airlines operator reported an 11 percent rise in quarterly profit as it flew fuller planes.

** AMERICAN AIRLINES GROUP INC, $38.13, +2.94 pct

The world's largest airline by passenger traffic said third quarter net income soared 87 percent, topping analysts' estimates, buoyed by declining fuel costs.

** SOUTHWEST AIRLINES CO (NYSE: LUV - news) , $34, -0.58 pct

The airline company reported a 27 percent rise in quarterly profit as it boarded more passengers and benefited from lower jet fuel costs.

** DUNKIN' BRANDS GROUP INC, $44.47, -4.96 pct

The coffee chain operator reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by a rise in sales at its Dunkin' Donuts chain in the United States, its largest market.

Battered by weak U.S. drug sales and a bribery scandal in China, the company is looking to float its fast-growing HIV drugs business as part of a recovery plan that includes a fresh round of cost cutting.

The drugmaker reported a better than expected adjusted profit on strong sales of its blood disorder drug Soliris, and raises its full-year profit forecast for the fourth time this year.

** UNILEVER PLC (NYSE: UL - news) , $39.26, -3.01 pct

The fast moving consumer goods company posted its weakest quarterly sales growth in nearly five years, as Europe's persistent woes and a slowdown in emerging markets including China crimped its performance.

** APPLE INC (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) , $104.96, +1.91 pct

Chief Executive Tim Cook said the iPhone maker is planning to open 25 retail stores in China within the next two years, according to a Chinese transcript of an interview posted by web portal Sina.com.

The stock was the biggest pull on the S&P 500, and was the most traded on the Nasdaq.

** ALIBABA GROUP HOLDING LTD, $93.973, +2.56 pct

The Chinese e-commerce giant is looking to expand its entertainment content offering on its Internet television set-top boxes through deals with studios in the United States, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The stock broke above its previous best closing of $93.89, which was on its debut on Sept. 19.

Barclays Capital started coverage on the stock with an "overweight" rating and price target of $107. The company is "breaching new frontiers" with its potential for monetisation, Barclays (LSE: BARC.L - news) analysts said.

** GOOGLE INC (Xetra: A0B7FY - news) , $555.79, +2.41 pct

The Internet giant launched an email service called "Inbox" on Wednesday that will better organize emails and display information such as appointments, flight bookings and package deliveries in a more user-friendly way.

** SELECT COMFORT CORP, $24.665, +14.30 pct

The mattress maker raised its full-year profit forecast after its quarterly profit and revenue beat average analyst expectation, driven by demand for its Sleep Number adjustable mattresses.

** ACACIA RESEARCH CORP, $15.7, +3.09 pct

The company, which buys and licenses patent rights, reported third-quarter profit and revenue that beat the average analyst expectation, helped by lower costs and increased license revenue.

** CHEESECAKE FACTORY INC, $43.15, -3.03 pct

The restaurant and bakery operator posted a lower-than-expected third-quarter profit as a 6.3 percent rise in revenue was more than offset by a 7.9 percent increase in expenses.

** CORE LABORATORIES NV (NYSE: CLB - news) , $126.61, -9.62 pct

The reservoir management company reported a lower-than-expected third-quarter revenue and gave a fourth-quarter profit outlook below the average analyst estimate.

** TRACTOR SUPPLY CO, $70.88, +15.63 pct

The stock was the top percentage gainer on the S&P 500 after the company, which operates U.S. retail farm and ranch stores, raised its full-year sales, profit forecast to high end of previous outlook after third-quarter profit and revenue beat the average analyst estimate.

** AIR METHODS CORP (NasdaqGS: AIRM - news) , $46.74, -15.77 pct

The air medical transportation company's estimated its third-quarter profit of 83-87 cents per share, well short of the average analysts' estimate of $1.08.

** CITRIX SYSTEMS INC, $61.54, -5.00 pct

The stock was the biggest percentage loser on the S&P 500 after the cloud-computing software maker said it expects 2014 revenue of $3.13 billion-$3.14 billion, below the average analyst estimate of $3.18 billion. The company's third-quarter revenue missed the average analyst estimate.

** XEROX CORP, $12.5, +2.38 pct
