Cash machine withdrawals plunged as storms hit UK, says ATM network Link

The number of people withdrawing money from cash machines has plunged in recent days as people sheltered indoors during the stormy weather.

During Storm Ciara on Sunday February 9, transactions were down by more than a quarter (28%) compared with a year earlier, UK cash machine network Link said.

And as the country was hit by Storm Dennis over the weekend, transactions tumbled by £115 million.

Graham Mott, director of strategy, Link, said: “We saw a big hit on normal transactions over the past two weekends as customers decided to avoid the wet and windy weather and stay at home.

“Customers can be reassured that the Link network has been unaffected by the wet weather and is up and running to meet the UK’s cash needs.”
