SINGAPORE — Next year’s Chingay Parade will be presented as a digital experience due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with cultural performances to be aired live on television and social media from 8pm to 9pm on 20 February.

The People’s Association (PA) said in a media release on Thursday (26 November) that it will be the first time the annual event, which is into its 49th edition, is to be shown in such a format for audiences to tune in from anywhere.

Over 2,000 performers and 150 organisations will partner PA to come up with the Digital Chingay 2021 programme, which will be themed “Light of Hope”.

They will be making use of new forms of presentations, such as choreographed computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects for dragon dance and pole act performances, as well as for bringing together local and overseas troupes from over 10 countries for a 100-lion dance performance.

Another example is a multiculturalism segment which utilises technology to reinvent traditional ethnic performances, highlighting intricate details that cannot be usually seen at the physical Chingay Parades.

“Jalan Jalan with Chingay” community engagement campaign

Anchoring the Digital Chingay 2021 programme is a community engagement campaign entitled “Jalan Jalan with Chingay”, which will showcase a diversity of local and community talents.

Selected submissions from the following programmes will be featured as part of the Digital Chingay 2021 line-up:

  • We’ve Got Talent!: Submit a one-minute creative video, either alone or with friends, families and neighbours, with no genre restrictions.

  • Sing With Me!: Join forces with other singers to sing JJ Lin’s “As I Believe” as one community. Submit a video singing or with family and friends.

  • D:2 Dance Competition Vol. 1: An inaugural dance competition for youth dancers of all styles to express their creativity.

The campaign will also launch several programmes early next month, to encourage co-creation among the community.

For “Let’s Build A Float!” and “Sew (So) Stylo!”, the public can design their own Chingay float and costume respectively. Meanwhile, Chingay TV will air mini-series and talent videos submitted by the community.

Locally-designed products, including those from social enterprises, will also be available from next January for the public to purchase at the Chingay Mama Shop. The public can also partake in various activities under “Jalan Jalan with Chingay” campaign, and stand a chance to win attractive prizes as well as the chance to be featured in Digital Chingay 2021.
