Netflix has given us an early preview of Imelda Staunton in character as the Queen in The Crown. The Oscar-nominated actress takes over from Olivia Colman as Her Majesty in the final two seasons of the hit royal drama.

Creator Peter Morgan has confirmed that The Crown won't continue right up to present day, but will instead end in the early 2000s. As happened between seasons two and three, there will be an entire recast of the lead characters for the final two instalments, with different actors playing the royal family in their later years.

"As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan's scripts," said Staunton back in 2020, when it was confirmed that she would be taking on the role. "I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion."

While Staunton, perhaps best known for her roles in Harry Potter, Vera Drake and the Downton Abbey adaptation, will play the Queen, the late Prince Philip will be played by Game of Thrones actor Jonathan Pryce. Lesley Manville will be taking over from Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret; Elizabeth Debicki will replace Emma Corrin as Princess Diana; and Olivia Williams will follow on from Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles. It's widely reported that Dominic West will be filling Josh O'Connor's shoes as Prince Charles. Johnny Lee Miller will also join the cast as former Prime Minister John Major.

Filming is currently underway and series five, which picks up from the year 1990, is expected to air in 2022, with the final season following in 2023. For more on what you can expect from the final two seasons, click here.
