Dancing on Ice contestant Sonny Jay has revealed he was "worried" after seeing the stars he'd be competing against on the programme when he signed up.

The Capital Breakfast presenter got off to a promising start in his debut on the ITV show last week as the judges awarded him the Golden Ticket, fast-tracking him to the next week.

However, he previously had concerns about the "massive stars" on the bill including Myleene Klass, who was the first to be eliminated, and Denise van Outen, who's had to withdraw due to injury.

Speaking with Yahoo UK, he said: "When I signed up to do this show and I saw the massive names that were on it, that worried me because I thought 'wow everyone knows who Myleene is, everyone knows who Denise is'.

"My challenge for this show was to build a name for myself so I always thought it's going to be difficult every single week going up against a public vote of people like Myleene and like Denise."

The 27-year-old divulged he was surprised to see Klass go out first before stressing the importance of the public voting for their favourites.

"It's a point that needs to made every week, people need to vote," he said. "You have to vote otherwise people like Myleene will go and it's a shame."

He’s stranger to competition though, having competed in Britain's Got Talent back in 2012 as part of the group Loveable Rogues.

The band came fourth but went on to be signed up for record deal and were a support act for Olly Murs before they split in 2014.

Sonny Jay and his skating partner Angela Egan automatically got through to Sunday's show, which is Musicals Week, thanks to the Golden Ticket.

He was nominated by three of the four judges as John Barrowman, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean picked him while Ashley Banjo's vote went to athlete Colin Jackson.

But receiving the ticket came as a "massive surprise" to him.

"It was one of those things that I knew was a thing that you were able to get, I just didn't think I'd be the one getting it.

"It was a massive surprise especially with all the dances that were done on that night. I was just so chuffed by some of the comments I got from the judges, the fact that they said they wanted to keep seeing me come back, honestly I was so chuffed. It was really nice to get that sort of approval," Sonny shared.

When it comes to his biggest competition he reckons the one to beat is Coronation Street star Faye Brookes, who got the top score of 31.5.

"I think her dance for a first week was just unbelievable," he said. "I don't think there's been a best dance like that on a first week on Dancing on Ice."

Sonny Jay is appearing on ITV’s Dancing on Ice on Sundays at 6pm.
