Speaking of casinos, regular gaming taxes in Nevada help keep personal property taxes fairly low in many areas. You’ll also find no state income tax and no tax on food. Combine that with the average cost of living being just above the national average, you’ll likely find affordable options.

Carson City

Ramsey put Carson City on the top of the list. It’s the state capital, located about 30 minutes from Lake Tahoe, and has a more relaxed pace of life than many other centers of state government.

According to U.S. News & World Report, “Carson City offers a higher value of living compared to similarly sized metro areas.” The median home price here is about $552,000 and the median monthly rent is $1,950.

Elko

Check out Elko if you’re looking for a good-sized place that’s centered around hard work and unique community. This might be a more affordable option for you compared to Carson City. The median home price is about $390,000 and the median monthly rent in Elko is $1,200.

Gardnerville

It may be tough to find a community more welcoming than Gardnerville. It’s one of the oldest communities in the state — and Nevada’s first hub for agriculture and mining. Gardnerville offers city and rural living options. The median home price here is $791,000 and the median monthly rent is around $2,300. However, you’ll likely be able to find a deal if you look hard enough.

Las Vegas

You might be surprised to see Vegas on this list. Sure, there’s the casino and gambling side of Las Vegas, but a suburban side also exists. Don’t forget, Las Vegas is a college and military town. In addition, along with the many tech companies here, Vegas boasts large health science and manufacturing sectors.

Las Vegas Suburbs

Speaking of the economy, check out some of the suburbs of Las Vegas in order to gain access to the city’s growing economy. Options like Boulder City, Henderson, Mesquite and North Las Vegas offer a good quality of life without the neon lights of the casinos and hotels.
