Department store chain Debenhams will reopen shops in England and Wales on April 12 to complete its final closing down sale.

It was announced in December that the firm would would start winding down its shops after no rescue deal was agreed for the struggling chain.

But since then another national lockdown has come in, and the firm in January said six sites would not reopen from that lockdown.

Remaining branches will reopen on Monday as part of Debenhams’ final stock liquidation process and will continue to trade for a limited number of weeks until the stock in the stores is fully cleared.

The sites will start to close permanently from early May, with the final stores expected to close by May 15.

Earlier this year online fashion retailer Boohoo bought the intellectual property assets of Debenhams from administrators, but the sale did not include shops or stock.

A spokesman for Debenhams said: “This is the last chance for customers in England and Wales to visit their local Debenhams before sadly our stores close for good.”

The spokesman added: “We are very grateful for the efforts of our staff who have worked so hard throughout the most difficult of circumstances to keep the business trading.”
