Declan Rice injury latest: West Ham star steps up recovery but David Moyes coy over return date

Declan Rice has stepped up his recovery from a knee injury, but West Ham manager David Moyes remains coy on when the England international could return.

Moyes is desperate for the 22-year-old to be available for selection having been sidelined since the March international break, during which he suffered knee ligament damage against Poland.

The Scot recently suggested that Rice was ahead of schedule in his recovery, but still refuses to put a timeframe on when the midfielder can return. Crucially, however, Moyes would not rule out his star man for Sunday’s game.

With four games to go - starting against Everton this weekend - West Ham sit three points off the Champions League places and Moyes knows Rice will play a key role if they are to claim a remarkable top-four finish.

Moyes is always tight-lipped on injury news and would only say that Rice has begun working on the grass again at the club's Rush Green training ground.

Asked for an update on Rice’s fitness , Moyes said: "We’re getting closer because we’re another week down the line and we’re hoping that we can have him available, he’s back on the grass and we’re closing in on it.

“Undoubtedly he’s a big miss to us and we’ll try and get him back as quickly as we can. I’m just hoping to have him available, I’m not going put any time on it.

"I’m not trying to bluff anybody but in the same breath, I’ve got to be really wary of it.

“He is so important for us, we have to get him back as quickly as we can.

“We need him, he can make the difference in the games and there’s a big game coming up this weekend for a starter."
