Elon Musk is in the midst of a custody battle with Grimes, and things are getting as complicated as a SpaceX mission.
According to reports from Business Insider, Musk initially filed in Texas, accusing Grimes of moving to California to avoid the Lone Star State's child support cap of $2,760 per month for three kids.
Grimes fired back with a countersuit in California, seeking physical custody. Musk reportedly had custody of their 3-year-old son X Æ A-Xii against Grimes' wishes. The different child support limits in California, where there's no cap, could mean a hefty sum for Musk, currently the richest person in the world. As of Nov. 24, he has a net worth of $241.1 billion.

On Nov. 20, Musk reportedly amended his petition, claiming Texas as the proper jurisdiction because it was the kids' home state when he first filed. The court docs suggest Grimes moved to California in 2023 with two kids, leaving X behind in Texas with Musk.
But Grimes tells a different story in her countersuit, stating the kids have been in California with her since Dec. 31 last year. The battle is not just about who gets the kids but also about which state has the authority to decide. Musk cites legal agreements between states, making this a jurisdiction jigsaw puzzle that could take months to untangle.

Insider also reported earlier this month that court documents reveal Grimes made a dozen unsuccessful attempts to serve Musk with custody papers at multiple locations. Despite multiple attempts, the process servers faced challenges in delivering court documents to Musk directly. They were turned away on several occasions, encountering resistance from security personnel at both Tesla Inc. and X, as well as a police officer in Boca Chica, Texas. In response, the servers reported leaving the papers with secondary personnel, which included security staff at X Corp., Tesla and SpaceX, as detailed in court documents.
Musk and Grimes are grappling with the intricacies of the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act and the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act. This legal puzzle has placed them in a situation where they must establish the children's residence, contributing to a state of legal uncertainty in their ongoing custody dispute.
Musk is juggling more than just parenting drama. While fighting to establish jurisdiction for the custody case, he is embroiled in another legal showdown. He's filed a lawsuit against Media Matters for America revolving around allegations that the nonprofit organization is intentionally working to drive advertisers away from his platform X.
