Judge orders railway to pay Washington tribe nearly $400 million for trespassing with oil trains
BNSF Railway must pay nearly $400 million to a Native American tribe in Washington state, a federal judge ordered Monday after finding that the company intentionally trespassed when it repeatedly ran 100-car trains carrying crude oil across the tribe's reservation. U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik initially ruled last year that the railway deliberately violated the terms of a 1991 easement with the Swinomish Tribe north of Seattle that allows trains to carry no more than 25 cars per day. The judge held a trial earlier this month to determine how much in profits BNSF made through trespassing from 2012 to 2021 and how much it should be required to disgorge.

The Chinese government is taking aim at European farmers instead of German automakers by launching an investigation into European Union pork imports, just days after the EU said it plans to impose provisional tariffs on China-made electric vehicles. The Commerce Ministry didn't mention the EV tariffs when it announced Monday that it is opening an anti-dumping investigation into pork from Europe, but the move is widely seen as a response to the EU move on electric cars. It also gives China a bargaining chip in any trade negotiations.

China may target the European Union's pork producers in retaliation for EU tariffs on its electric cars. The world's second largest economy revealed on Monday that it had launched an investigation into imports of pork for human consumption from the bloc. The Commerce ministry inquiry was in response to a complaint by Chinese pork producers earlier this month.

Musk plans stock option grants to Tesla's high-performers, sources say
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Tesla CEO Elon Musk told employees on Monday that the electric vehicle maker is working on stock-based compensation for high-performing employees, according to two people who reviewed an internal memo. The plan comes just days after Musk won shareholder approval for his $56 billion pay plan consisting of stock options and two months after he announced job cuts affecting more than 10% of Tesla's global workforce in the face of slowing demand for EVs and intensifying price competition from Chinese rivals. "Over the next few weeks, Tesla will be doing a comprehensive review to provide stock option grants for exceptional performance," Musk said in an email, according to the two people who reviewed it and are based in China and the U.S., respectively.

STORY: China has opened an anti-dumping probe into imported pork from the European Union.The step comes less than a week after Brussels announced new curbs on electric vehicle exports from China. That was due to growing alarm over Chinese industrial overcapacity flooding the EU with cheap products, including EVs. China’s commerce ministry said the investigation, which was announced and commenced on Monday (June 17) will focus on fresh, cold and frozen whole cuts of pork and pork by-products. The ministry added that the probe was prompted by a complaint from the China Animal Husbandry Association on behalf of the domestic pork industry.The European Commission announced on June 12 that it would impose tariffs of up to 38.1% on imported Chinese cars from July.Global food companies have been on high alert for retaliatory action from China since then.European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill:"The answer is 'No, we're not the least bit worried' because not all subsidies are the same, and any subsidies that take place under the Common Agricultural Policy or indeed in any other policy area in the European Union are strictly in line with our WTO obligations and we put the strongest possible emphasis on ensuring that this is the case."Spain is the top supplier of pork to China and its pork producers group Interporc said they would fully cooperate with China's investigation. European pork producers should be able to keep exporting to China tariff-free while the investigation is underway.Customs data showed that in 2023, the EU accounted for more than half the roughly $6 billion worth of pork China imported - around a quarter of which was from Spain.Pork suppliers from South America, the United States and Russia could be among those gaining market share if Beijing restricts imports from the European Union.China’s commerce ministry said that the investigation should be completed by June 17, 2025, but could be extended by another six months if required.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Pork suppliers from South America and the U.S. could gain market share in China if Beijing restricts imports from the European Union in response to escalating trade tensions, traders and analysts said. Russia, increasingly a close trading partner of China that started exporting pork to China in February, could also step up meat shipments. China's commerce ministry said on Monday it had opened an anti-dumping investigation into imported pork and its by-products from the EU, after the bloc imposed anti-subsidy duties on Chinese-made electric cars.

China's Leapmotor started EV production at Stellantis' Polish plant, Jefferies says
A Stellantis-led joint venture has started production of electric vehicles of China's Leapmotor at Stellantis' Tychy plant in Poland, analysts at Jefferies said, quoting Leapmotor's management. Jefferies said in a report late on Sunday that Leapmotor's management said at an analyst call the first units of its T03 small EV rolled off Stellantis' assembly plant in Poland last week and was on schedule for mass production in September. Reuters had reported in March, citing two people close to the matter, that Stellantis had chosen its Polish facility as the first production base in Europe for Leapmotor's cars, primarily for cost-saving reasons.
