Gas prices: Alberta sees double-digit increases in three cities this week

Gas prices jumped by an eye-watering 17 cents per litre in Edmonton this week, the biggest gain among more than 70 cities nationwide, followed by a 16.6 cent increase in Red Deer, Alta.

According to the data firm Kalibrate, the nationwide average price for a litre of regular gasoline rose 0.8 cents to $1.511 between Feb. 1 and Feb. 8. Sarnia, Ont. and Sudbury, Ont. saw the biggest discounts over the seven-day period.

In Vancouver, average prices fell 5.9 cents per litre, after climbing 4.8 cents last week. En-Pro International chief petroleum analyst Roger McKnight recently called for rising prices in Metro Vancouver due to the outage at Parkland's Burnaby, B.C. refinery. The gas station giant behind brands like Pioneer, On the Run, Ultramar, and Esso said on Jan. 24 that normal operations are expected to resume in four weeks.

Meanwhile, on Bay Street, investment analysts see Parkland shares soaring to new all-time highs, thanks in large part to strong retail fuel margins. The stock is up more than 48 per cent over the past 12 months.

In other news, Canadians are expected to spend more on customizing their vehicles in 2024. A survey DesRosiers Automotive Consultants and Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario found 69 per cent of aftermarket retailers see single-digit sales growth this new year. That's after more than a third reported sales growth of more than 10 per cent year-over-year in 2023.
