A 3-year-old girl who survived a two-story, overnight fall died of hypothermia after she was unable to get back inside her home.

Charlotte "Charlie" Handelman was found unconscious Tuesday morning outside a home in the 1500 block of 14½ Street in Rock Island, Illinois, the Rock Island Police Department said, NBC affiliate KWQC reported.

Officials believe she fell from her second-story window at some point between Monday night and Tuesday morning, which is when she was found outside by her father, Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson tells PEOPLE.

Gustafson says Charlie survived the fall with no apparent injuries, but was later pronounced dead at a local hospital after teams worked "aggressively" to save her for more than two hours. Her preliminary cause of death was hypothermia.

"At this time, we're investigating it as nothing more than a very tragic accident," Gustafson tells PEOPLE.

Gustafson says that the window in the girl's room had been left cracked open to help cool down the warm house, and that she'd pushed it up further before falling.

Charlie's death remains under investigation by the Rock Island Police Department, which did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
