If You Had Bought Anaplan (NYSE:PLAN) Shares A Year Ago You'd Have Made 97%

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. To wit, the Anaplan, Inc. (NYSE:PLAN) share price is 97% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 25% (not including dividends) in the same period. So that should have shareholders smiling. We'll need to follow Anaplan for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.

Because Anaplan made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last year Anaplan saw its revenue grow by 47%. That's a head and shoulders above most loss-making companies. The solid 97% share price gain goes down pretty well, but it's not necessarily as good as you might expect given the top notch revenue growth. So quite frankly it could be a good time to investigate Anaplan in some detail. Since we evolved from monkeys, we think in linear terms by nature. So if growth goes exponential, opportunity may exist for the enlightened.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective

Anaplan shareholders should be happy with the total gain of 97% over the last twelve months. The more recent returns haven't been as impressive as the longer term returns, coming in at just 13%. Having said that, we doubt shareholders would be concerned. It seems the market is simply waiting on more information, because if the business delivers so will the share price (eventually). Investors who like to make money usually check up on insider purchases, such as the price paid, and total amount bought.
