Here's Why I Think Vitec Software Group (STO:VIT B) Is An Interesting Stock

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Vitec Software Group (STO:VIT B). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Vitec Software Group Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Vitec Software Group managed to grow EPS by 15% per year, over three years. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Not all of Vitec Software Group's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. Vitec Software Group maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 17% to kr1.3b. That's progress.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Vitec Software Group's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are Vitec Software Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Vitec Software Group insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at kr888m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 19% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Vitec Software Group with market caps between kr1.9b and kr7.7b is about kr4.9m.

Vitec Software Group offered total compensation worth kr3.5m to its CEO in the year to December 2018. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Does Vitec Software Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

As I already mentioned, Vitec Software Group is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for Vitec Software Group, but the fun does not stop there. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Vitec Software Group by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
