Hitachi CTA Delivers Massive MME/SGSN Scalability for Mobile Operators

Telco Cloud MME/SGSN Utilizes Juniper Networks Contrail's SDN/NFV Controller for Virtualized Environments

RICHARDSON, TX--(Marketwired - Jun 16, 2014) - Hitachi Communication Technologies America, Inc. (Hitachi CTA) announced its massively scalable virtual MME/SGSN, as a virtualized network function (VNF), successfully integrated with Juniper Networks' Contrail SDN/NFV controller.

Mobile service providers are turning to Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to quickly scale up network capacity and scale out the availability of network elements in a Telco Cloud, without the need to invest in discrete, proprietary physical network elements. Hitachi CTA is leveraging Juniper Networks Contrail SDN and NFV controller to create a truly elastic network function which adds capacity without the complexity. Juniper Networks Contrail orchestration capabilities simplify Hitachi CTA's MME/SGSN, independently scaling based on operator deployment requirements:

  • subscriber sessions - enabling the millions of new LTE and mobile to mobile (M2M) devices; and

  • transactions processing - managing the dramatic increase in 4G device transactions rates; and

  • radio access point connectivity - exceeding the fan-out required by the increasing deployment of small cells.

This elastic scaling maximizes the benefits of a virtualized network element.

"Together, Hitachi CTA and Juniper Networks are able to create a single MME/SGSN VNF architected to scale well beyond 20 million simultaneously active subscribers," said Reg Wilcox, CEO of Hitachi CTA. "Juniper Networks Contrail provides a proven carrier-grade SDN architecture that enables us to meet the performance and scalability requirements of the largest mobile service providers in the world."

"Juniper Networks is pleased to be working with Hitachi CTA to deliver carrier-grade MME/SGSN VNF. As carriers automate and accelerate their mobile and cloud businesses, they are looking for open, interoperable solutions that excel in scale, resiliency and service delivery for their current and emerging opportunities," said Ankur Singla, vice president and general manager, Juniper Networks.

An ACG Research paper concluded that a virtualized MME/SGSN would reduce overall total cost of ownership by 54 percent over a physical appliance-based product while adding new capacity 87 percent faster.

Technical and market trials with Hitachi CTA virtualized MME/SGSN solution are in progress with leading operators to demonstrate Hitachi CTA's highly flexible and scalable architecture along with feature rich capabilities in moving legacy networks to an NFV architecture. Hitachi CTA's virtualized MME/SGSN is platform agnostic and is able to support a mobile operator's preferred platform choice.
