Hollyoaks' Sid Sumner has partial leg amputation after car crash

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Sid Sumner has had to have a partial leg amputation in the wake of his tragic accident in Hollyoaks.

The first chapter in an ongoing storyline for the character started this week when Peri accidentally ran over Sid's right leg with her car, after he'd collapsed in the road from taking ketamine.

In Thursday's (November 12) first-look episode, Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson) was rushing Peri (Ruby O'Donnell) to the hospital to visit Sid when his description of the accident twigged her memory.

"I did this," she realised. "I think I was driving the car."

Ste was furious over the revelation, but was even angrier when Jordan Price (Connor Calland) crossed his path as they arrived at the hospital.

"I know a screw-up when I see one. I was one," he admitted.

Ste was the one able to visit Sid first, revealing that Peri was going to give a statement to police taking responsibility for the crash.

"It wasn't her fault, Ste. Make sure she knows that! It was mine," Sid insisted.

Sid wasn't aware of how badly he'd been hurt in the crash, worrying instead about how much trouble he'd be in once Leela found out.

"I wanted you to hear this from one of us first," Ste said. "Your leg is damaged really badly. The circulation down there has stopped."

As Ste explained, the doctors felt the only option was to partially amputate Sid's leg. Sid understandably started to panic, demanding to see other doctors for a second opinion and other options.

"There are no other options," Ste said. "We are all trying to look out for you, and I promise you it's going to be okay."

Ste explained that he knew how Sid felt because he had a doctor deliver life-changing news seven years ago when he was diagnosed with HIV.

"My life, it just got better. Yes, I had to make adjustments," he said.

Sid desperately struggled to accept his fate, insisting that his leg was "fine" even though it clearly wasn't. Outside the hospital, Jordan struggled with his guilt for telling Sid he was "dead to me" prior to the crash while Peri struggled with her own decision not to stop and check.

Ste and Peri were then approached by Juliet, who'd heard about the accident from Ollie. They enlisted her to convince Sid to have the operation he needed.

Sid had already come around to the idea of having the surgery, but he commiserated with Juliet that "nobody was going to look at [him] twice" afterward.

"Someone who's a lot better for you than me [will]," Juliet promised.

Later, a terrified Sid was shown staring at his leg while Misbah prepped him for surgery, telling him: "Sid, you're going to be alright."

In the final scenes of the episode, Sid was shown coming around after the surgery as Misbah assured him that "the operation was a success".

Tears rolled down his face as he looked at the bandaged amputation area, while Misbah went to get Ste to be by his side.

The soap will continue to examine the long-term impact of Sid's life-changing injury in the weeks and months ahead.

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4. Classic episodes, titled Hollyoaks Favourites, air on Fridays at 7pm on E4.
