Honda expected to shut Swindon plant in 2022; 3,500 jobs at risk — report
Honda is preparing to announce it is closing its Swindon factory in the UK in 2022, according to Sky News.
Swindon acts as the Japanese company’s European hub, employing about 3,500 workers. The factory builds about 150,000 Civic cars every year that are shipped to 70 countries.
UK car manufacturers build about 1.5 million cars per year, so a Honda closure would cut out 10% of all UK production.
Representatives at Honda were not immediately available to comment.
The union representing Honda’s Swindon workers, Unite, said it had no prior knowledge of any potential closure.
Honda (HMC) said last month it would shut its British operations for six days in April to help it counter any border disruption from the Britain’s planned departure from the European Union.
Other car manufacturers with operations in the UK, including Jaguar Land Rover and Ford (F), also recently announced plans in the past two months to cut thousands of jobs as they face deep uncertainty over Brexit, along with a crash in diesel sales and a shift towards electrified technology.
