US employers added a solid 206,000 jobs in June in a sign of continued economic strength
America’s employers delivered another healthy month of hiring in June, adding 206,000 jobs and once again displaying the U.S. economy’s ability to withstand high interest rates. Last month’s job growth did mark a pullback from 218,000 in May. But it was still a solid gain, reflecting the resilience of America’s consumer-driven economy, which is slowing but still growing steadily. The unemployment rate ticked up from 4% to 4.1%, a still-low number but the highest rate since November 2021.

China hints at targets in EV tariff battle
STORY: China has dropped some hints about how it could retaliate against EU tariffs on its electric vehicle exports. The Commerce Ministry said Friday it would hold a hearing to examine claims European brandy producers are selling into the country at below market rates. Officials have also referred to another probe into EU pork exports. Analysts say the targets were chosen to pressure Spain and France - which have been among the strongest backers of the new levies. Europe this week imposed import tariffs of up to 37.6% on China-made EVs. That will hit local brands like BYD, but also Chinese-made cars from western firms including Tesla. The tariffs are provisional, while Brussels conducts a probe in Beijing’s support for its carmakers. China has said both sides should stay at the negotiating table for now. Officials have said they don’t want another trade war, but will take all necessary steps to protect Chinese firms. Reports in state-backed media indicate other possible targets for retaliation. That could include dairy products and luxury cars. The EU tariffs have also divided opinion in Europe. German automakers have called for them to be scrapped, fearing they could be a target for Beijing’s response.

Ahead of the bloc confirming tariffs of up to 37.6% on Chinese-made EVs on Thursday, a commerce ministry spokesperson told a news conference that Brussels and Beijing should keep negotiating, but kept the prospect of retaliation was alive with a reference to another investigation into EU pork imports.

China's Chery Auto is starting sales in Italy with a petrol version of its Omoda 5 crossover SUV, priced from 27,900 euros ($30,182), as the automaker assesses its options to expand its manufacturing capacity and sales in Europe. One of several Chinese companies bringing budget cars to Europe, mostly electric, Chery began European sales in Spain earlier this year. Two-thirds of American middle-income families feel they are falling behind the rising costs of living in the US, according to data from Primerica. Though a tick down from last year's sentiment of 71%, this is still a worrying figure as more Americans are dealing with price pressures tied to housing costs and food prices. Primerica (PRI) CEO Glenn Williams talks more about the data with Brad Smith, stating "we also detect a high level of stress financially from these families" as US consumers reprioritize their spending. "As we sit down with families, clearly they know they need to be saving for the future, particularly for retirement. They need to make sure debt doesn't get out of control. But we see them in action. We sit down with them and first analyze where they are today. And that's where it exposes that. What sometimes they think is happening is not exactly what's happening. They're spending more than they think. They're using credit more, they're saving less, or the amount that they're saving is not going to get them where they want to go in time," Williams elaborates. "And then as families get started, they get a little momentum. And then they find out it's easier to take the next step and the next step. We find out that, Brad, it's not usually the information, it's the personal application of the information to their specific circumstances that confuse families.
