Investors in HomeTrust Bancshares (NASDAQ:HTBI) have seen returns of 27% over the past year

One way to deal with stock volatility is to ensure you have a properly diverse portfolio. But the goal is to pick stocks that do better than average. HomeTrust Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:HTBI) has done well over the last year, with the stock price up 25% beating the market return of 23% (not including dividends). On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 3.7% in three years.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

HomeTrust Bancshares was able to grow EPS by 64% in the last twelve months. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 25% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. So it seems like the market has cooled on HomeTrust Bancshares, despite the growth. Interesting. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 7.44.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on HomeTrust Bancshares' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of HomeTrust Bancshares, it has a TSR of 27% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

HomeTrust Bancshares provided a TSR of 27% over the year (including dividends). That's fairly close to the broader market return. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 4%. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for HomeTrust Bancshares (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
