John Lewis' Christmas decorating trends for 2023

Here's a first look at John Lewis' Christmas decorating trends for 2023, with six festive themes inspired by the magic of nostalgia and the enchantment of Christmas.

Yes, we're still technically in summer, but retailers are gearing up for another busy Christmas season (recap last year's highlights in the video above), and, as is tradition at this time of year, we're sharing a sneak peek at what's to come.

The themes focus on 'remembering the past, embracing the present and anticipating the future' and there are plenty of highlights for Christmas 2023.

Led by the in-house design team, John Lewis has revisited its archives to give treasured vintage prints a new lease of life. 'From baubles to wrapping paper and glassware to napkins, the carefully reimagined designs have been celebrated throughout the Christmas collection,' says Lisa Cherry, Christmas buyer. 'The sell-out Flora tableware collection is back, this time with charming Christmas designs.'

Also new for 2023 are two alternative Christmas trees for those who prefer to go against the grain; a copper-toned tree and a vibrant blue tree. We're also rather thrilled to find out that John Lewis will be launching an exclusive collection with Nkuku (one of our favourite brands with a focus on ethical and eco-friendly handmade homewares), selling recycled glass baubles, tabletop trees, and tree toppers.

Plus, John Lewis has confirmed that all wrapping paper and crackers sold this year will be glitter-free and 100 per cent recyclable.

1. Christmas Cottage

Warm copper tones, gold details and an opulent colour palette, all of which perfectly complement John Lewis' colour of the season, damson, is key to this theme. Inspired by the arts and crafts movement, Christmas Cottage is an emotive, wholesome and humble celebration of our homes, with rural escapism at its heart. Echoing a contemporary autumnal look, it's ideal for those who like to put up their Christmas tree earlier than usual. Central to this theme is the 7ft Unlit Copper Tree for £229.

2. Winter Fairytale

Create that winter wonderland look with the classic Winter Fairytale trend that builds on a frosted colour palette (snowy whites) alongside high shine metallics (copper and silver) and muted pastels (soft pink). Accessorise with beaded unicorn ornaments and cloud glass baubles.

3. Rainbow Time Capsule

A playful and joyful theme (and ideal for the dopamine decorator), Rainbow Time Capsule aims to bring the humour in our everyday moments to life. Expect multicoloured decor, personalised baubles, gentle nods to pop-culture trends and fond childhood memories.

4. Polar Planet

A trend full of hope and celebration, Polar Planet is strongly influenced by our increased appreciation of the natural world, alongside the rise of slow living and a desire for sustainable products that have minimal impact, both on people and the planet we live on. There's a play on shapes, colour (whites and greens) and textures (felt and wood) for a theme that is cohesive and ethereal.

5. Royal Fairytale

In a year that saw the Coronation of King Charles III, John Lewis has identified Royal Fairytale as a Christmas theme for 2023. Centred around candlelit castles, luxurious banquettes and mythical creatures, bring a regal touch to your festive celebrations with dark, rich colours, from ruby reds to midnight blues.

6. Beyond

The Beyond trend is highly decorative with a high-shine appeal. This playful theme centred around space and technology, pairs silvers with midnight blues and embraces sparkly ornaments, holographic wrapping paper, and quirky baubles from robots to zodiac signs. Key to this theme is the 7ft Unlit Beyond Blue Tree 7ft retailing for £299.
