Contouring is a great way to enhance or define the shape of your face. By using makeup that is slightly lighter and darker than your natural skin tone, contouring can add dimension to your makeup look. On this episode of In the Know: Beauty School, celebrity makeup artist and host Patrick Ta shares his tips and tricks for contouring like a pro.
The first step of contouring is to pick the perfect shade for your skin. When it comes to a cream contour specifically, Ta says he prefers “one that’s not too orange, not too grey. You really want to find the perfect shade to create a nice shadow.”
Using the Patrick Ta Creme Contour & Powder Bronzer Duo and Patrick ta Contour Brush, Ta applies the cream first using a simple rule of thumb. “If you are looking from the nape of your ear, you want to follow that line. And I’m really just pressing the product onto the hollows of the cheekbones,” demonstrates the makeup artist. While the cream should be focused on the center of the cheekbone, Ta notes that you can diffuse and blend the product into your foundation once you move higher on the cheekbone.
Ta also applies the cream underneath the model’s jawline. “You always want to bring your contour a little bit right behind your ear just so it really shapes your jawline,” he explains. Next, Ta applies the cream contour on the halo of the model’s forehead using pressing motions and blending as he goes.
Once the contour is applied, Ta begins to blend it in to avoid harsh lines. “I don’t ever like to draw lines on the face and then leave it, so I’m going to blend the product into the rest of the skin,” Ta explains as he gently pats and blends the cream contour into the model’s foundation using an Original Beautyblender Makeup Sponge.
Ta finishes up his contour lesson by shading around the model’s nose and lips, and setting the contour by pressing a setting powder into all the areas that he applied the cream.
