Legally Blonde Cast Reunites for 20th Anniversary as Third Film Gets Official Release Date

Reunited and it feels so good!

For the first time in two decades, Reese Witherspoon and the cast of 2001's hit comedy Legally Blonde reunited in a special hosted by Saturday Night Live's Chloe Fineman that aired Tuesday on Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine's YouTube page. The special is in support of World Central Kitchen.

Witherspoon, 44, was joined for the virtual group chat by original castmates Luke Wilson, Holland Taylor, Jennifer Coolidge, Selma Blair, Ali Larter, Jessica Cauffiel and Alanna Ubach.

"Feeling like the luckiest guy in America right now," Wilson, the lone male at the reunion, jokingly said.

Reminiscing, Witherspoon admitted that none of the cast expected the movie to become so iconic.

"I don't think any of us knew what this film was going to turn out to be or how much it was going to inspire young women and young people across the world," the Oscar winner said. "I travel the entire world and always, the movie that people stop me about is Legally Blonde. And the thing that actually really touches my heart is more people stop me and say, 'I went to law school because of Elle Woods.' Which is really amazing."

Legally Blonde stars Witherspoon as Harvard Law student Elle Woods as she defies expectations to excel in the courtroom. The beloved film was followed up by a sequel in 2003, subtitled Red, White & Blonde.

After the reunion, MGM Studios —the producer of the first two films — confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 is happening, and even has an official release date.

"Elle Woods is back! Legally Blonde 3 coming May 2022. We rest our case. #LegallyBlonde3 #ElleWoods @ReeseW," the studio tweeted alongside a GIF of Witherspoon as Woods from the first film.

Legally Blonde 3 was first announced back in June 2018.

"We’re definitely talking about it," Witherspoon said at the time. "I mean, it’s sort of about women being underestimated and I think it’s sort of a good idea. Things have changed, but not that much has changed! I loved playing that character and she’s so amazing."

Mindy Kaling confirmed in May that she was writing the script for the third film alongside Emmy-winning scribe Dan Goor. Earlier this month, Kaling spoke to Good Morning America more about her involvement with the film.

"I was nervous because the movie is so iconic,” recalled Kaling. “But then I thought, ‘It'd be really fun to see that character in her 40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman?' ”

“It's been really funny to write," the actress added. "I'm working on it with my friend Dan [Goor], and I think it's going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.”

Legally Blonde 3 is expected to hit theaters in May 2022.
