More than 50 of Britain’s most prolific artists, including Maggi Hambling, Sarah Maple and Kate Malone, have donated works to be auctioned online from 15 to 30 May to raise funds for Horatio’s Garden. The charity supports spinal-injury patients and their loved ones by planting and nurturing beautiful, flourishing gardens at NHS centres.

Pieces by exciting emerging artists, including Sky Art’s Portrait Artist of the Year winner Christabel Blackburn and the ceramicist Hitomi Hosono, will also be featured in the sale.

Spanning paintings, sculptures and photography, the works donated reflect ideas of freedom and the joy of being surrounded by nature, and the healing power this can have on the human body.

“Beautiful gardens, art and music are a heady combination,” says Maggi Hambling, who has donated an expressive landscape oil painting titled Moon and Sea. “I trust the auction will help to make this feast for the spirit continue and thrive.”

Also up for auction will be a striking collage of the female form by Sarah Maple, a floral assemblage of luminescent Dutch blooms by Rob and Nick Carter and a watercolour sketch of Edward Scissorhands by Tim Burton.

Curated by the fine-art auctioneers Woolley & Wallis, lots range in price from £300 to £30,000, and all proceeds will go to the charity, of which Princess Eugenie is patron.

“It’s fantastic to see all the brilliant artists involved in the Summer Art Auction,” she says. “At this particularly difficult time, it is so important that work continues to build and maintain the charity’s treasured hospital gardens across the country and improve the lives of everyone affected by spinal injury.”
