Murray Powers Past Lu Into Third Round

Murray Powers Past Lu Into Third Round

Andy Murray wasted little time in reaching the third round of Wimbledon as he beat Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets.

The second seed was broken in the opening game of the match but was largely dominant from then on, winning 6-3 6-2 6-1 in just an hour and 40 minutes.

He will next face Australian John Millman following his four-set win over 26th seed Benoit Paire.

"I think the second and third sets, I played well," said Murray. "The first set was a tough set. Both of us had a bunch of chances, a lot of deuce games. Once I got that, got an early break in the second, I started to settle down, played better tennis. I finished the match really well.

"I've started well here quite a few times over the years. I don't know if this is the best one or not. But today was, for sure, a good match, an improvement from the first round, against a guy who has won a lot of matches on the grass recently.

"I was just happy that I improved as the match went on. Hopefully I start the next match like I finished this one, keep it going."

World No 76 Lu had beaten Murray in their first meeting at the 2008 Olympics, and entered Wimbledon in good form, winning Challenger events in Ilkley and Surbiton after reaching the final in Manchester.

It looked as though he might pose Murray some problems on Centre Court as he broke in the opening game and established a 3-1 lead.

However, Murray was soon into his stride, breaking Lu for 3-3 and then again to move 5-3 ahead, before serving out the set.

A seventh game in a row put Murray in further control at the start of the second as Lu's level dipped.

Even though Lu managed to fend off a couple of break points at 3-1, he could not take his chance on the Murray serve as the world No 2 saved a rare break point with a drop shot.

A double fault from Lu handed Murray a break for 5-2 and the British No 1 won the next game to put himself in complete control.

His dominance was further enhanced by a break to love at the start of the third set and by the time Lu got on the board it was 4-1.

At that stage there was only one winner and victory was sealed with a double fault from Lu.

British women's number one Johanna Konta was unable to hold off a strong challenge from Eugenie Bouchard as the Canadian won their second-round Wimbledon match 6-3 1-6 6-1.

And French Open champion Garbine Muguruza crashed out in the second round of Wimbledon after a shock 6-3 6-4 defeat to Jana Cepelova.

The second seed was expected to challenge again at the All England Club after reaching the final last year.
