Musical revival of 'On the Town' finds a home on Broadway in old Foxwoods Theatre
NEW YORK (AP) -- The boys are back in town: "On the Town," the 1944 musical about three sailors on shore leave in New York City, is steaming toward Broadway.
Producers said Thursday that the musical, with music by Leonard Bernstein and a story and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, will find a berth this October at the Lyric Theatre.
The Lyric is the renovated and renamed venue formerly known as the Foxwoods Theatre, the former home of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark." The Ambassador Theatre Group bought the Foxwoods last year.
The new revival will be directed by John Rando, who won a Tony for helming "Urinetown." It will also feature choreography by Joshua Bergasse an Emmy Award winner for "Smash." Both men teamed up for a version of the show last year at the Barrington Stage Company.
"On the Town," which was last on Broadway in 1998, was also made into a 1949 film starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. It features the songs "New York, New York," ''I Can Cook Too," ''Lonely Town," and "Some Other Time." In the show, the three sailors jump around the city looking for love before having to return to their ship.
No casting was announced.
What show would replace the Spider-Man musical was the basis of much speculation, with many thinking the huge theater would be perfect for the Australian musical "King Kong." But that show is not ready for New York yet.
