The 'Parent Trap' Reunion You've Been Waiting 22 Years for Is Here

Katie Couric is a The Parent Trap fangirl, just like all of us. Today, on the 22nd anniversary of the movie's release, the journalist reunited the Parent Trap cast and crew—including Lindsay Lohan, Dennis Quaid, writer-director Nancy Myers, Elaine Hendrix, and others—to talk about their favorite moments, the lasting impact, and that famous handshake. (For those wondering, yes, Lohan does still remember the moves.)

When Couric asks the reunited cast and crew what they thought made this film so timeless, everyone had something to say. "This movie had the fantasy of getting your parents back together, and so many kids come from broken homes—I did—and I think it fulfilled that dream for kids," writer and producer Charles Shyer said.

Lisa Ann Walter, AKA "Chessy," said the movie "makes you believe in the possibility of love" while Quaid, still seemingly in character as America's favorite sappy dad, said the film "just had some sort of stardust that was just sprinkled on it." Lohan also marveled at how the film has continued to stay relevant.

"The most incredible thing about The Parent Trap in itself is, even still, younger generations and little kids that go to camp, they even know it now," Lohan said.

The cast also paid tribute to Natasha Richardson who died in a skiing accident in 2009, sharing what it was like to work alongside her. "Natasha had such an elegance and grace and she was so maternal to me," Lohan said. Quaid added: "[She was] somebody so giving and so glad to be there and [she] transmitted that joy of being able to do what we do, and it just made everything that much better."

The cast and crew also had plenty of praise for Lohan's acting expertise from such a young age. Quaid, recalling doing a screen test with the then 11-year-old actress, said, "I remember thinking, 'Oh my gosh, that's one of the most talented people I've ever met period, forget that she's 11 years old.'" He also admitted that he was fooled on set for a while, thinking that there were actually two separate girls, since Lohan's "accent was so perfect."

Meyers, who was a first-time director at the time, agrees that Lohan was a big part of what made the film so special. In a statement to HelloGiggles, she praised the entire cast, but particularly Lohan.

"The movie was just a fun one to make and I think that comes across on screen. The cast was fantastic, the locations were beautiful and at the center was this astonishing child who handled her two roles with incredible ease." She added that her family was on set with her and that her daughter, Hallie—who made an appearance in the film—and Lohan would play together during production, "always working on dance routines and dressing alike and doing each other’s hair."

Released on the 22nd anniversary since the film first came out, Meyers says "everything about the timing [of the reunion] just seemed right." She continued, "We had a very happy shoot on that film and it had been way too long since we all saw one another. And getting together to help raise money for World Central Kitchen during this time seemed like a really good idea."
