Pascal Siakam undergoes shoulder surgery, expected to miss 5 months

Toronto Raptors forward Pascal Siakam underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder last week, the team announced Thursday.

Siakam is expected to miss five months, which will stretch through training camp and the first few weeks of the 2021-22 season, which will tip off on Oct. 19.

The 27-year-old forward sustained the injury on May 8 during a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Siakam was setting a screen where he was bumped by Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke in the third quarter. He did not play the remaining four games of the season.

From the outside, it appears as if the Raptors and Siakam tried a non-surgical approach towards rehab before electing for surgery. A month elapsed between the injury and time of the surgery. Siakam is a famously hard worker who always uses the offseason to improve his game, but the injury and rehab will likely keep him from his normal routine.

Siakam averaged 21.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 56 games this season. He missed time due to a COVID-19 related absence, and it was an uneven year for him, just as it was for almost every member of the Raptors during their season away from home.
