Prince Louis' third birthday on Friday (23rd April) was marked by the release of an adorable new photograph of the royal by his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as he hit a big milestone.

The snap, shared on the official @KensingtonRoyal Instagram account, shows the young royal on his first day of nursery last week.

Little Louis is beaming at the camera, wearing a navy jumper over a striped blue and white shirt with coordinating blue backpack and trainers, and pale blue shorts, as he sits on a bright red bicycle.

The candid snap was taken by his mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, as has become the tradition with photographs of Will and Kate's three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

"Taken earlier this week by The Duchess before he left for his first day of nursery, The Duke and Duchess are pleased to share a new image of Prince Louis."

Will and Kate's youngest has just started attending Willcocks Nursery School in London's South Kensington, where his big sister Charlotte also went, according to the BBC.

Royal fans were delighted with the new snap of the young prince, and it has been inundated with likes and happy birthday messages.

Happy birthday, Prince Louis!
