INDIA-RICE/ (PIX, GRAPHICS) (PIX)

India’s rice exports curbs to continue as weather dents output

30 Oct - Untimely rainfall and a strong flow of winds toppled Ramkali Bhargav’s rice crop earlier this month just before harvesting, after recovering from a series of setbacks caused by this year’s erratic monsoon rainfall that prompted New Delhi to ban the exports of the grain. The crop loss is not just a problem for Bhargav but also for millions of overseas buyers that are struggling to secure supplies as rice prices in the global market jumped to 15-year high after India curbed exports. Lower production could force India to maintain export restrictions for a longer period as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government tries to stabilize prices amidst a series of state elections next month ahead of a general election next year. India accounts for more than 40% of world rice exports and the prolonged curbs on the exports could inflate food prices given low inventories in other exporting countries such as Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan.
