Even the best stock pickers will make plenty of bad investments. And unfortunately for Shineco, Inc. (NASDAQ:TYHT) shareholders, the stock is a lot lower today than it was a year ago. The share price is down a hefty 54% in that time. We wouldn't rush to judgement on Shineco because we don't have a long term history to look at. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 47% in the last 90 days.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year Shineco saw its earnings per share drop below zero. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so it doesn't surprise us that the stock price is down. We hope for shareholders' sake that the company becomes profitable again soon.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

A Different Perspective

Given that the market gained 7.1% in the last year, Shineco shareholders might be miffed that they lost 54%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. With the stock down 47% over the last three months, the market doesn't seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we'd remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance.
