History buffs looking for a unique vacation home will definitely want to book a stay at Smith Family B&B’s Platform 1346, a charming bed and breakfast that used to be a WW2 train car from 1943!
Run by Dean, Adrienne, and Tayler Smith (@smithfamilybnbs), Platform 1346 is located in Maryville, Tennessee, and has a rich history while providing all the modern conveniences and comforts that guests could want on vacation.
According to the family’s website, the train car came with the property when they purchased their home. They converted the U.S. Army-commissioned train car, used as a kitchen car for troops during World War II, into a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom bed and breakfast.
Today, the 520-square-foot train car is a multi-purpose living space. Its interior features a full-service contemporary kitchen and dining area with a landscape view. While the appliances are current, the Smiths made sure to incorporate the train’s history in the decor.
An original photo of the kitchen’s interior hangs behind an electric mixer, seamlessly blending the old with the new. “I think what we tried to do is keep it in-tune with what would have been more of its time, but be modern,” Adrienne tells In The Know.
Adding to the train car’s “historic flare” are its original floorboards. “These are the actual floors that people were using to stand on when they were preparing meals for the troops,” Dean proudly explains.
Gesturing towards the ceiling, Dean mentions that the now decorative arches used to hold water tanks for the train’s water supply. “We love giving things a second life,” says Tayler Smith. “I think this whole train car kind of is an experiment on [that]. When we showed up, it was empty and rusting, and now it’s something that hundreds of people have enjoyed.”
Adjacent to the kitchen is the living room which includes a comfortable fold-out couch and large television. As if things weren’t charming enough, Dean gives viewers a tour of the bedroom, which doubles as an office space thanks to the queen-size Murphy Bed with a memory foam mattress.
Last but not least, Dean shows off the full-size bathroom located at the back of the train car, which the Smiths designed around a cast-iron claw-foot bathtub.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, fascinated by all things World War II, or just enjoy the novelty of sleeping in a converted train car, Platform 1346 offers the best of both worlds, where guests can travel back in time while still having a WiFi connection.
