STOCKS NEWS EUROPE-UK small caps up 0.1 percent, ahead of FTSE

The FTSE small cap index and junior-listed AIM shares edge 0.1 percent higher, underperforming the mid-caps which are up by 0.2 percent, but ahead of the blue chips which drop 0.4 percent.

Topps Tiles (LSE: TPT.L - news) , Britain's largest specialist tile retailer, rises 5.4 percent after it said trading in its new financial year started strongly, and posted its first rise in adjusted pretax profit since 2007.

Topps Tiles is the top gainer on the FTSE small cap index, and has traded 80 percent of its 90 day average volume, compared to a 17.6 percent average on the broader index.

Edenville Energy rises 13.3 percent in volume over five times its 90 day average after announcing its intention to develop its Rukwa coal project in Tanzania so it can support a power station with a capacity of at least 100 mega watts.
