Textured hair, especially for those in the Black community, can be tricky to maintain. Most mainstream hair care brands that you may find at your local drug or department store often don’t have the necessary ingredients to cleanse, protect and restore textured hair types without stripping the follicles.

In response, tons of Black-owned hair care brands have emerged to address this demand over the past few years, and Sunday II Sunday is one of the latest to join the roster.

Sunday II Sunday aims to make exercise more accessible for women with textured hair. The products remove sweat and replenish the hair without using water. This method is ideal for textured hair as it’s usually more porous.

Keenan Beasley, Sunday II Sunday’s founder and CEO, told In Style in January 2021 that he launched the brand after seeing a “lack of diversity” in a few influential spaces in his former roles.

“When I was working at L’Oreal and running Garnier, the lack of diversity and how textured hair was treated overall is something that stood out to me,” he said. “It was positioned as this dry and damaged category, which I thought was a horrible way to position it.”

He added that, while it’s true that textured hair is usually drier than straighter and less coarse hair types due to the hair follicle’s shape, “it’s just a different hair type” and isn’t always dry or damaged.

In an effort to simultaneously educate the public and provide products for women whose hair needs are often overlooked by mainstream brands, Beasley created Sunday II Sunday, and the response was explosive. Less than a year after the launch, the brand raised over $6 million in funding with backing from Johnson & Johnson Innovation, won product awards from Allure and Glamour and officially launched at Sephora.
