Super Bowl LV betting: One bettor placed $2.3 million on the Buccaneers

BetMGM was getting most of its action for Super Bowl LV on the Kansas City Chiefs, which would have put the sportsbook in a position to be rooting against Patrick Mahomes and the defending champs.

One big bettor helped balance the action.

While there were some six-figure wagers on the Chiefs already, a bettor made an enormous bet on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a 3.5-point underdog.

A bettor placed $2.3 million to win $2 million on Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.

Massive bet on the Buccaneers

BetMGM reported some large wagers on the Chiefs. There was a $180,000 bet on the moneyline, which would win $100,000. There were also $115,000 and $110,000 bets on the Chiefs at -3.5.

Then came the first reported seven-figure bet on the Super Bowl at BetMGM. The Buccaneers will have to either win, or lose by three or fewer points for that bettor to collect his or her $2 million win.

“This was a bet we were very happy to receive,” said Jason Scott, VP of trading at BetMGM. “BetMGM had previously written several six-figure bets all on the Chiefs and the public is certainly behind Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. This big Buccaneers bet has helped balance our book.”

Even with the enormous bet on the Buccaneers, the line didn’t move. It’s still Chiefs -3.5 at BetMGM.

Kansas City getting most of the bets

As of Tuesday, 80 percent of the money bet on the point spread in the Super Bowl was on Kansas City. That’s not a big surprise.

The Chiefs are a popular team because of Mahomes and their star-filled offense. They can score in a hurry and have rarely lost the last three seasons since Mahomes became the starter. Even though the Chiefs had a streak of nine games without covering the spread before blowing out the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game, bettors kept taking the Chiefs.

The Buccaneers got to the Super Bowl the hard way, winning three straight road games. Given Tom Brady’s history of success, Tampa Bay’s stars and their playoff run, you’d figure there would be some more bets coming in on Tampa Bay.

The Bucs aren’t getting love from a lot of bettors so far. But one bettor really, really loves them in the Super Bowl.
